The new year is bringing a fresh breeze from over the horizon with promises of novelty and exciting challenges. Trial by Frost, the first expansion for Altered, is releasing in less than a month now, on January 31, 2025 and today we’re really excited to show you more about the set and launch the Reveal Season.

All throughout next month, we’ll be celebrating Trial by Frost and releasing new information, articles, card reveals and more, so grab your warmest coat and get your best climbing gear because this adventure is about to take you to unprecedented heights!

After reclaiming the neighbouring regions of Asgartha in Beyond the Gates, Trial by Frost takes you to the Cais Adarra, a steep range of mountains shrouded in eternal winter. There, our expeditions, fresh from their victory against the Kraken, have to face a new environment and adapt to extreme weather. Between its dangerous slopes and wondrous sights, the Cais Adarra will prove a real challenge where only the most skillful and resilient will make their way to the top, where answers await.

Trial by Frost introduces a total of 282 cards, including 12 returning Heroes. As a first core set, Beyond the Gates introduced 18 heroes, but not all were able to shine right out of the gates, and so some of them will start to prove themselves in Trial by Frost. Because a Hero does not feature in the list above doesn’t mean their archetype doesn’t get some new tools as well. But you’ll have to follow along the Reveal Season to see who gets a bit of a power up!

Starting with Trial by Frost, you’ll be able to open Adventure cards in your booster packs. Adventure cards share the same slot in a booster pack as tokens and Mana Convergence cards (more on booster drop rates lower in this article). These cards feature brand new artwork to represent your progress through the snowy landscapes of the Cais Adarra.

As an expansion to Beyond the Gates, Trial by Frost will only be available in booster packs and displays. Beyond the Gates Starter Decks will be your entryway product until the release of Set 4 in Q3 2025 and each set until then has been designed to bring all heroes new tools to deckbuild with.

Booster packs are the easiest way to complete your Altered collection and each pack contains everything you need to customize your deck. In Trial by Frost, gear up with a brand new type of Permanent, manage your Reserve closely less you become exhausted and adapt to the elements to make your way through the different regions.

One in every 8 Trial by Frost booster packs may contain a unique card, the highest rarity in Altered with only one copy of it existing in the entire world!

Booster displays are ideal to collect Rare and Unique Altered cards or to draft with your friends! Trial by Frost brings an entirely new batch of unique cards with new effects, and new adventure cards to collect.
