It is difficult to know how many years this period actually lasted. During this troubled era, few cared to measure time with precision... However, it is commonly accepted that the Great Wandering lasted between one hundred and one hundred and fifty years. During this span, legends have survived: those of the Tumult Nomads. The few survivors gathered into large Tribes that roamed the world, traveling from Oasis to Oasis, from places shielded from the Tumult to makeshift shelters. Historians assert that at least eight Tribes existed, eclectic gatherings of peoples and communities brought together by fate. They roamed the now fabled Terra Incognita, home to wonderful lands, moors of unreal beauty, baroque palaces of improbable architecture, as well as desolated places gripped by chaos, where ice burns and mountains float above rivers of obsidian.

The wisest among the survivors began to perceive the flows of the Tumult, gradually discovering the secrets of Alteration. By developing this ability, some of them managed to relatively shape their environment and materialize their imagination. This ability helped communities survive within the altered world. Alteration could indeed fend off the Tumult to some extent, providing humanity with new solutions for ensuring its safety. Foremost among these solutions were the Eidolons, creatures from the collective unconscious that Alterers could manifest in reality to aid them. It is now accepted that it was the Oneiroi who, through dreams, trained the first Alterers by guiding them from the edge of their subconscious. They also, ultimately, urged them towards a great migration, to a promised land, towards a rebirth.
