Tell us your story with "Altered". How did you discover the game and why did you like it?
I noticed Altered in late 2023. The first thing that really caught my eye was the beautiful art, like that of Nevenka and Ratatoskr. At that time there was not a lot of information available yet, but luckily Maindeck Dan was already covering the game. I listened to the podcast and browsed the website of Altered itself. The more I saw and read, the more hooked I became!
Secondly the gameplay was very appealing to me. The way the expeditions work with a character only being there for one day, going to the reserve and then being able to play them again the next day felt refreshing. The non-combative playstyle also resonates with my wife and this is the first TCG we are both truly passionate about.
Lastly, the online and offline collaboration is something that has stood out to me as well. The whole idea of a digital collection; safeguarding against the loss or accidental coffee-spill on a beloved card, is great and feels very innovative. Being able to brew a deck online as well as having access to a marketplace from your phone just adds to that feeling of being a part of something new and exciting.
What have you done in the community?
When I joined the official Discord server I noticed a lot of countries had their own Discord server as well. I started the Dutch/Belgium Discord server as it was not there yet. With this, I wanted to create a space where players and shops could get together and find each other. For the players to talk, to trade cards, share decklists and strategies or maybe just to get to know each other. And for the LGS to promote their OP and let our players know when and where to go.
As information was a little scarce at the start, I wanted to create a website where news concerning Altered would be easy to find. This is how I became one of the founders of the alteredtcg.blog website, together with The Coin Pusher. Our team was recently joined by some great bloggers to keep the content going. Apart from the website I also started my own Youtube channel where I show the decks I like to play, to give new players coming to Altered an idea of how they could start.
As Altered was growing in the Dutch community, I was looking for a bigger tournament to play in. Together with the admins of our server we successfully hosted the first big Dutch Altered Championship (DAC) and are now planning a second edition. At the same time I am planning an online league as well to accommodate people who want more options for competitive play.
What is your favorite card and faction? Why?
As my nickname suggests, I really love Bravos. The theme in this faction is all about the way that I enjoy playing in any TCG; a fast paced playstyle, boosting characters, ramping into big dudes and playing with tokens. I think a lot of people know me from my Kojo Foundry decks as I love to play that archetype.
My two favorite cards must be The Hatter and Foundry, Axiom Bastion as my decks always seem to play around those cards whenever possible. Special mention goes to Hua Mulan and Tanuki for their amazing art.
What are you looking forward to in the future of the game?
I’m looking forward to more sets, more ways to play competitively and meeting more people. The community aspect of Altered has been one of the best experiences so far. Meeting up with people you know from the Discord server and to play with them at the same table is absolutely fantastic.
As for the competitive scene: I hope that one day we’ll see a worlds or some kind of pro-tour tournament with live commentating, deck guides and interviews, in a big hall or convention centre with cosplay, side events and a lot of people enjoying the game. How wonderful would that be?!
