Tell us your story with "altered". How did you discover the game and why did you like it?

I started playing TCGs when Magic came out, trying countless others over the next decades. My interest eventually dwindled and I sold all my cards during the pandemic, shifting my gaming focus towards TTRPGs, convinced my history with card games was over. But then I saw Maindeck’s interview with Eric after Gen Con and immediately knew Altered would be something special that I wanted to be a part of. Unique cards, the absence of combat, the colorful art, the digital marketplace, everything spoke to me.

The cherry on top: learning that Régis Bonnessée was behind the project! With Quebec culture being as European as it is American, a TCG from France with some board game roots seems like the best of both worlds.

What have you done in the community?

I have been very active on the official discord (perhaps too much!), especially in the months leading to the kickstarter, answering questions, trying to address the initial concerns of newcomers, but sometimes also challenging Equinox and giving suggestions of my own. The team’s passion is contagious and I quickly became super invested in the game’s success.

I am also the moderator of the Altered subreddit. I put in a lot of time and I am pretty proud of having seen the number of members go from 2 to over 1.5k! I am currently running a small giveaway for some KS goodies and you can expect others as we approach release.

On the local level, I went to the Roadshow event in Montreal and hope to be a pillar in the community when the game launches. No city outside Europe had more backers than Montreal and I am certain Altered will have a bright future here.

What's your favorite card and faction? Why?

So difficult to answer before finding my first Uniques! I will certainly build decks for all factions, but I’m pretty sure Muna, Lyra and Yzmir will be my favorites. I am not a super competitive player, my main goal is to have games that are surprising and memorable. Lyra will accomplish that with some randomness, Muna with its deceiving peaceful nature and Yzmir with crazy combos and late comebacks. So far the rare Lady of the Lake is one of the cards that intrigues me the most. Pretty cool to threaten playing the same spell three times in one Afternoon!

What are you looking forward to in the future of the game?

Everything! Super curious to see how uniques will impact metas, how the marketplace will evolve, how players and collectors will approach Print on Demand and the digital/physical dual nature. Also eager to see the BGA implementation and test Uniques immediately after purchase on the marketplace.

Last but not least, I am very excited to see the surprises Yoshi has in store for us. And who knows, perhaps I will find a way to have a role in the future of Altered. Am I hyped enough to build a complete TTRPG in the hope of convincing Equinox to bring me on board? You bet I am! But perhaps we should keep that a secret for a little while...
