Season One of Altered is upon us! Today we’ll be outlining everything you need to know to engage in organized play during the inaugural season to celebrate the release of Altered’s first set, Beyond the Gates on September 13th 2024.

All official Altered events will require registration through the Altered app (currently in BETA.)

All physical retailers that have purchased Altered retail products through distribution are eligible to participate in the organized play program. If you’re a physical retailer and have purchased Kickstarter Edition Altered product, contact your distributor for information on eligibility for Season One of OP.

If you’re looking to host Altered events as a store at release, don’t worry! We’ll be giving more information about what that entails in the coming weeks, including how to create a Pro Shop account and getting started with OP. If you do not have a store account yet, here is how to create one.

Season One of Altered will begin on launch day, September 13, and run until the day before the next expansion releases (early Q1 2025, final date TBA).

Stores will be able to run Expeditions each week, which will be the primary way for players to play in official Altered events.

All rewards and events in this article outline Season One only- things will change for every season!

While LGSs have the ability to craft Expeditions to meet the needs of their community, all Expeditions will award Promo Boosters as prizes*! (*while supplies last)

Promo boosters will be an exciting way to acquire some of the most sought after rewards in Altered. This is what you can expect in the Beyond the Gates promo boosters!

The Adventure Pass is designed to reward players for simply playing in official Altered events, no winning required! You’ll select a faction and start earning rewards as soon as your first event, including some exclusive rewards that only your faction can gain!

Reminder:

• you can play with any Hero and still earn rewards, even if it doesn’t match the faction you’ve selected.
• Only one faction can be selected per season.

This is what you can expect for the Beyond the Gates Adventure Pass.

• Badges represent a proud piece of your history within Altered and a symbol of your personal investment.
• Badges are digital rewards you’ll collect and will be able to showcase on your player profile at any time.
  • Player’s profile customisation tools and showcasing will evolve and improve in the future season to offer you more ways to use.

• Come in each rarity: Common, Rare, and Unique
• Foilers in your collection give you a "right to foil a card".
• You can use it to give “foil” status to one card in your collection if both the foiler and the chosen card have the same level of rarity.
• Once used, this "foil right" is consumed for good.
• “Foil” statuses will remain on that card in your account permanently, even if you have none of those cards in your collection. If you ever reacquire cards that you’ve previously given the “foil” status later, those will still maintain their “foil” status.
• Adventure Pass foilers will be added to your collection automatically at the end of the season.

• Identical in terms of gameplay to their counterparts available in the retail boosters, Alt Art Cards offer a beautiful graphic variant that you can play with instead of the original.
• Alt Art Cards are considered “exclusive arts” and will answer to specific restrictions when it comes to the use of print-on-demand services. More details to come later this year.

Note: we’ll update this article once we have the card images for each alternate art reward, but for now you can get a great look at the exclusive arts!

As a reminder, the Adventure Pass is completely free to players and completely hands off for stores. Simply register for an event digitally via the Altered app; you’ll earn a step once you complete that event. Wins and losses won’t help or hurt you- only that you play and complete the event!

We want to celebrate Altered finally making its way into the hands of the community with Beyond the Gates. For this occasion, Launch Events will take place on the weekend Altered releases worldwide, September 13, 14, and 15!

For this first season we will not provide players and stores with specific kits and are willing to first experiment on the formats and players wishes before we finalize the perfect kit.

With the Kickstarter campaign many players already experienced Altered in various ways and the very purpose of a pre release kit for this season completely changed. Since some communities that have backed the Kickstarter release have had the ability to explore Altered earlier than the global release date of Friday, September 13th, we wanted to create an event that was welcoming for all communities.

If you’re a retailer and want to host a Launch Event at your store, you can select from one of these formats:

• Players receive 1 Starter Deck + 3 Retail Booster Packs. Players will open their Starter Deck and improve it with the addition of the 3 packs to create a new deck.

  • Minimum deck size is 40 cards, with players able to play cards from 3 different factions, including their Hero.
  • Players may use any cards they open in their 3 Booster Packs to modify their Starter Deck.
  • Heroes opened in the 3 Booster Packs may be used instead of the Starter Deck Hero as long as it is within one of the 3 factions they have selected for their deck.
  • Players may make modifications to their deck between rounds.
    • We advise you to use this format if you want to offer a more beginner friendly experience.

• Players receive 7 Retail Boosters.

  • This variant offers a very fun experience for players that have already played Altered at least for a dozen games.
    • For this variant, remember that players or yourself will need to provide the Adventure Cards, since they are not present in the boosters.
    • This format is Sealed Deck, and uses Sealed Deck construction rules.

It is recommended that both formats use 4 round, best-of-one with a 30 minute deckbuilding time limit and a 30 minute round limit

That weekend will be the first time you can earn Promo Boosters and embark on the Adventure Pass, so reach out to your LGS and ask them to plan a Launch Event!

We initially intended to provide event organisers with an integrated tournament management tool. Unfortunately, this tool will not be ready right away. As a result, and so stores have a few weeks to familiarize themselves with the tool, we have decided to offer two Adventure Pass levels to all players who activate their pass during Season 1. This way, we hope you will enjoy organised play with peace of mind, whether you are an organiser or a player.
